pH measurement in aquariums & ponds

Fish forgive a lot - but not pH swings. Why continuous measurement is so valuable in the aquarium and which electrode was built for it.

Why pH matters so much in the aquarium

Every fish species has its comfort zone: discus and many South Americans like it slightly acidic around pH 6 to 6.8, while African cichlids from Lake Malawi prefer alkaline water around 7.8 to 8.5. More decisive than the absolute value, however, is stability - rapid jumps of more than 0.3 to 0.5 units mean stress, up to and including fish loss. And because the pH value is closely linked to carbonate hardness (KH) and CO₂ content, it is the most sensitive early-warning system in the tank.

CO₂ control via pH

In a planted aquarium, the pH electrode is more than a measuring instrument - it actively controls: a pH controller measures continuously and opens the solenoid valve of the CO₂ system as soon as the value rises above the set threshold. More CO₂ lowers the pH, the valve closes again. The CO₂ level thus settles automatically in the optimum range for plant growth. The prerequisite is a reliably calibrated electrode - here it is the regulating organ, not just the display.

Which electrode fits?

  • Design: A gel electrode - maintenance-free and made for continuous immersion. Refillable electrodes are impractical in continuous operation.
  • Connector: Most aquarium controllers use BNC - making electrodes interchangeable across brands.
  • Cable length: From the tank to the controller in the cabinet, two metres are quickly needed; measure first, regret never.
  • Placement: Membrane always fully submerged, preferably in a current, but not directly in the bubble stream of the CO₂ reactor - air bubbles on the membrane falsify the reading.

Calibrating and caring in aquarium life

Calibrate every two to four weeks with pH 7 and pH 4 buffers - in continuous use the electrode ages gradually, and with CO₂ control a drifting sensor regulates the whole tank wrongly. Rinse algae films off the membrane gently, never rub. After 12 to 24 months of continuous operation, a replacement is usually due.

Pond and koi

In a pond, weather and biology join in: algae blooms push the pH up during the day by consuming CO₂, and it falls back at night - swings of a full unit are possible. For koi ponds with their sensitive (and valuable) fish, continuous measurement is particularly worthwhile. Practical points: UV-resistant cables, a protected mounting position, and in winter store the electrode frost-free and moist.
