Buying guide: finding the right pH electrode
Five questions, one checklist, no bad buys: the systematic route to the electrode that truly fits your application.

Five questions to the right electrode
The choice of pH electrodes is wide, but the decision follows a clear logic. Answer these five questions in order and you land almost automatically on the right model.
Question 1: Where will you measure?
The application determines almost everything else - design, ruggedness, connector. The short version:

Question 2: Gel or refillable?
The most important design decision boils down to a rule of thumb: If the electrode stays in the medium permanently and should need no care → gel. If maximum accuracy in individual measurements counts → refillable. The detailed comparison including ISFET is in the electrode types.
Question 3: Does the connector fit?
The finest electrode is useless if the plug does not fit. Check the input on your meter or controller:
- BNC - the de-facto standard on aquarium controllers, pool equipment and many hand-held meters; compatible across brands.
- S7 / screw head - common on process electrodes; the cable is screwed on separately.
- DIN or proprietary - on some laboratory and branded devices; look closely here.

For installation in measuring cells and fittings, also check the mechanics: a 12 mm shaft diameter and 120 mm length are the widespread standard, and the PG13.5 thread for screw-in mounting.
Question 4: With or without a temperature sensor?
Does the temperature at the measuring point fluctuate, or do you measure sometimes cold, sometimes warm? Then an electrode with an integrated temperature sensor (ATC) is worthwhile - provided the meter can use it. In constantly tempered applications (a living-room aquarium, an air-conditioned lab with equilibrated samples) it is dispensable.
Question 5: How much quality does it take?
Answered honestly: the pool dosing system does not need a premium laboratory electrode - ruggedness and regular replacement count for more there than the second decimal place. Conversely, in the lab the cheapest electrode ends up the most expensive when measurement series have to be repeated. Buy the quality your application demands - no more, but no less either.
The checklist before buying
- Application and medium clarified (temperature? pressure? fouling?)
- Design chosen: gel / refillable / ISFET
- Connector type of the existing device checked
- Mounting dimensions checked (shaft diameter, length, thread if any)
- Temperature sensor: yes / no
- Cable length generously measured
- Accessories planned: pH 7 + 4 buffer solutions and KCl storage solution belong in every starter kit

One common bad buy, to finish
The classic: a pH electrode is ordered, but a redox electrode was needed (or the other way round). Both look almost identical but measure completely different things. If your dosing system has two sensors, check before ordering which one needs replacing - the label "pH" or "Redox/ORP/mV" is on the electrode or the socket.
