Replacing a pH electrode - without nasty surprises
The swap itself takes ten minutes. What happens before and after decides whether the new electrode measures correctly from the start.

At some point the day comes: cleaning and soaking no longer bring the slope above 90 percent, the diagnosis reads replacement. The good news: the swap is no rocket science - provided the replacement fits and a few sequences are respected.
Before buying: does the new electrode fit?
- Check the connector - BNC, Cinch, screw cap? The connector types overview brings clarity.
- Note shape and dimensions: in fittings, PG 13.5 is the common screw-in thread, 12 mm shaft diameter and 120 or 225 mm length the usual sizes - in doubt, measure the old electrode.
- Match the electrode type to the medium: gel for low-maintenance continuous duty, liquid electrolyte for the highest demands - the buying guide walks you through the decision.
- Consider the temperature sensor: integrated, separate, or none at all?
- Think of supplies right away: fresh buffer solutions and KCl storage solution for conditioning and storage.
The swap in 7 steps
1. Secure the system
Stop the dosing or switch the controller to manual - a system reacting to a dead signal during the swap doses blindly. In process plants: shut off the line, release the pressure or move the retractable assembly to service position.
2. Remove the old electrode
Release the connector (the quarter turn on BNC), then unscrew the electrode from its holder or fitting. Check the sealing ring while you are at it.
3. Prepare the new electrode
Pull off the protective cap and rinse the KCl residue with distilled water. Visual check: if an air bubble sits at the membrane in the inner buffer, flick the electrode downwards with a short snap from the wrist - like a classic fever thermometer.
4. Install
Insert the electrode and tighten hand-tight - tools have no business at the electrode head. Mind the mounting position: liquid-electrolyte electrodes at least about 15 degrees above horizontal, gel electrodes work in any position.
5. Connect
Fit the connector dry and clean, route the cable without kinks and with strain relief, not parallel to mains lines.
6. Condition and calibrate
Give the new electrode 15 to 30 minutes in the medium or in KCl solution until it has taken on the temperature. Then recalibrate without fail - the old electrode's calibration data in the meter is worthless. The electrode check puts the result into perspective.
7. Document and release
Enter date, slope and zero point into the electrode logbook, release the dosing again and keep an eye on the system for the first hour.
What to do with the old electrode?
A pH electrode contains glass, a few millilitres of KCl electrolyte and, in the reference system, a silver-chloride-coated wire - no electronics and nothing acutely hazardous. In private households, general waste is the usual route; best wrapped up because of the breakage risk. Companies and labs follow their own waste regulations; there, electrodes usually go into the glass or laboratory waste collection.
The four most common replacement mistakes
Protective cap forgotten
The classic: the electrode measures nothing because the cap still sits on the membrane. Happens more often than you would think - especially with overhead installation.
Started with old calibration data
The meter keeps calculating with the slope and zero point of the removed electrode. Result: plausible-looking but wrong values. Recalibrating is mandatory, not optional.
Started dry
Straight from the box into the medium and measuring right away - the first readings then drift for minutes. The short conditioning spares you that.
Overtightened
Retightened with pliers, thread or glass shaft damaged. Hand-tight plus an intact sealing ring keeps it sealed.
