Storing a pH electrode correctly
Moist, frost-free, in KCl solution: how your electrode survives measurement breaks, winter and transport unscathed - and what to do if it has dried out anyway.

The basic rule: moist, but the right kind of moist
A pH electrode is born wet and should stay wet - its glass membrane only works with an intact hydrated layer, and the junction only with a conductive connection. The ideal storage medium is a storage solution of 3-molar potassium chloride (KCl), filled into the protective cap or a small vessel in which the membrane is immersed.
The classic misconception: Distilled water looks clean and harmless - but for storage it is poison. It contains no ions and therefore pulls ions out of the glass membrane and the reference electrolyte. The electrode leaches out and ages faster in the water glass than in service. Rinse briefly: yes. Store in it: never.
Short term: between measurements
For hours or a few days, the protective cap with a little KCl solution is enough. If you measure daily in the lab, stand the electrode upright in a vessel with storage solution - within reach and protected. An emergency solution for one day, if no KCl solution is at hand: pH 4 buffer or tap water. Both are better than dry or distilled.

Longer term: weeks to months
- Fill the protective cap with fresh KCl solution and seal it tight; secure against evaporation with a little film if needed.
- Store upright, membrane downwards - so it stays safely wetted.
- Cool but frost-free (ideally 5-25 °C). Freezing electrolyte bursts the membrane.
- On refillable electrodes, close the refill opening and top up the fill level before putting it away.
- Check every few months whether the cap is still moist.
Special case pool: winterising
The most common electrode death in the pool sector happens in winter: the electrode stays in the empty measuring cell, dries out or freezes. The right way: remove it in autumn, clean it, fit the protective cap with KCl solution, and store it frost-free indoors. In spring: soak, calibrate - and the season can start. Dried out - what now?
An electrode that has fallen dry is not automatically lost. The rescue attempt: soak in KCl solution for 24 hours (alternatively a few hours in pH 4 buffer), then calibrate and check the slope. If it is back above 95 %, the electrode has survived. If it remains clearly below or responds sluggishly, the hydrated layer is permanently damaged - then only a replacement helps. There is one exception, by the way: ISFET electrodes are the only design that may be stored dry.
Transport
For transport, the same applies as for storage: protective cap with solution, upright or well padded, protected from frost and heat. The glass membrane is the most sensitive spot - it usually survives a knock against the beaker wall, rarely a fall onto tiles.
