Cleaning & caring for a pH electrode
Dissolve, do not scrub: the right cleaning agent for every contamination - and the care routine that makes deep cleaning unnecessary.

The one rule above all
Whatever is stuck to your electrode: never rub, scrape or scour the glass membrane mechanically. The wafer-thin hydrated layer that makes the measurement possible is destroyed faster than any deposit is removed. For pH electrodes, cleaning always means: dissolve, never scrub.
Which contamination, which agent

After every cleaning: Soak the electrode for several hours in KCl storage solution (the hydrated layer must regenerate) and then recalibrate. A freshly cleaned electrode otherwise measures reliably wrong.
Do not forget the junction
At least as often as the membrane, the junction is the problem - the small porous transition to the reference system. If it is clogged, readings drift even though the membrane is spotless. Proven measures: soaking in warm KCl solution (not above 50 °C); on sleeve junctions, loosening the ground ring and moving it under running water; on refillable electrodes, completely exchanging the electrolyte.
What you should never do to your electrode
- Rub it dry or work on it with brushes or abrasives
- Immerse it in aggressive organic solvents without knowing the resistance of the shaft material
- Put it in an ultrasonic cleaner - the vibrations can damage membrane and internals
- Heat it above 60 °C to "clean faster"
- Leave it lying dry - after cleaning it belongs in storage solution
Care as a routine
The most effective trick is unspectacular: rinse briefly with distilled water right after every measurement, before anything dries on. Those five seconds save most deep cleanings - and measurably extend the lifespan.
